How to chop samples in Logic Pro

This is the Logic Pro version of how to chop a sample. The ideas carry over from any DAW; here's where to find them in Logic.

Step 1: Load Quick Sampler

Create a new software instrument track with Quick Sampler, then drag your sample onto it.

Step 2: Switch to Slice mode

Set Quick Sampler's mode to Slice. Logic divides the sample into slices and maps each one to its own key, in order.

Step 3: Choose how to slice

Slice mode can divide your sample:

• By transient: markers at each detected hit. Best for rhythmic material.
• By beat divisions: equal slices by musical timing. Good for loops at a known tempo.
• Manually: place your own markers. Often best for smooth chord progressions.

Check each slice starts right on the chord or hit. Move markers where detection is slightly off.

Step 4: Play and record

Play the slices from your keyboard or pads. Record a few passes and keep the one that grooves. Then open the piano roll to:

• tighten timing (or leave it loose for feel)
• reorder chops by moving notes
• lengthen or shorten each chop

Step 5: Shape the sound

• Use Quick Sampler's filter to cut the low end of the sample.
• Add small fades on slices that click.
• Try pitching individual slices for new melodies.

• Cutting audio regions: for arrangement edits, slicing regions on the timeline is quick and simple.
