This is the Ableton Live version of how to chop a sample. Two workflows, depending on how much control you want.

Method 1: Simpler in Slice mode

  1. Drag your sample onto a MIDI track to load it into Simpler.
  2. Switch Simpler's mode to Slice.
  3. Choose how to slice: by transients, beats, regions, or manually.
  4. Play the slices from your keyboard or pads. Each slice is mapped to its own note.

It's fast and keeps everything in one device.

Method 2: Slice to New MIDI Track

  1. Right-click an audio clip and choose Slice to New MIDI Track.
  2. Pick how to slice it (by transients, beat divisions or markers).
  3. Ableton creates a new MIDI track with a Drum Rack: each slice gets its own pad, with its own Simpler, and a MIDI clip that plays the slices in their original order.

Because every chop has its own chain, you can put effects, pitch changes and envelopes on individual chops.

Rearranging your chops

Open the MIDI clip and move notes around to reorder chops, or play a new pattern from your pads and record it. Loose, played timing often grooves better than a perfect grid.

A note on warping

Ableton warps audio by default. For sampled soul material:

  • If you want the classic sped-up sound, turn warping off and change the pitch, so tempo and pitch move together like a record.
  • If you want the sample at your tempo without changing its key, use a warp mode suited to the material.

Shape the sound

  • Cut the sample's low end with an EQ so your drums and bass have room.
  • Add short fades inside Simpler on slices that click.
  • Saturate the chops to glue them to your drums.
